Biography

Historical

John of the Cross was born Juan de Yepes in 1542 near Ávila, into a family impoverished after his father’s death. He entered the Carmelite order in 1563 and studied at the University of Salamanca. In 1567 he met Teresa of Ávila, who persuaded him to join her reform, and he became one of the first Discalced Carmelite friars.

In December 1577 he was seized by friars opposed to the reform and imprisoned in a tiny cell in the Carmelite priory at Toledo, where he was beaten and kept in near darkness for some nine months. There he composed much of the Spiritual Canticle. He escaped in August 1578, and spent his remaining years as a prior and leader in the reform in Andalusia and Segovia. Out of favour with the order’s leadership at the end, he died at Úbeda in 1591.

His poems, among them “On a dark night”, the Spiritual Canticle and The Living Flame of Love, are among the greatest in Spanish. He wrote prose commentaries on them, the Ascent of Mount Carmel, the Dark Night, the Spiritual Canticle and the Living Flame, which form a systematic account of the soul’s way to union with God. He was canonized in 1726 and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1926.

Scholarship

The soul reaches union with God through nights of sense and spirit, in which it is purified of attachment to everything that is not God; to come to the All, it must desire to have nothing.

The darkness the soul suffers in the passive night is the inflowing of God’s light, too bright for it to bear: infused contemplation.
