A Great Question

Are knowing and acting one?

Whether true knowledge already includes action, or must first be gained and then applied.

Framing

In everyday life we separate knowing from doing: first one learns, then one acts. Many people know what is right and do not do it. The contemplative traditions have asked whether this gap shows that knowledge comes first and action follows, or that what we call knowledge in such cases is not yet real knowledge.

The question matters for the idea of unitive knowledge itself. If the highest knowledge transforms the knower, it may be inseparable from a way of living; or it may be a pure seeing, to which action is irrelevant. The traditions answer in very different ways, and some of the sharpest disagreements occur within a single tradition.

The perspectives below range from the claim that knowledge alone liberates to the claim that knowing and acting are one.

Perspectives

Voices from several traditions, each in its own terms. They are set side by side to be compared, not ranked.

Reflect

What do you know that you do not yet live?
