Spanda

Spanda, “vibration”, “pulsation” or “throb”, is the Kashmir Śaiva name for the dynamic nature of ultimate consciousness. The Stanzas on Vibration (Spanda Kārikās), attributed to Vasugupta or his disciple Kallaṭa in the ninth century, teach that Śiva is not a static absolute but a living, self-aware consciousness that pulses outward as the world and returns into itself.

This pulsation is not a movement in space or time, but the inherent creative freedom of consciousness: its power to manifest, sustain and withdraw all things while remaining unchanged. The practitioner can experience spanda at the junctures of experience: the moment of surprise, the beginning of a perception, the space between two thoughts, or intense emotion. In these moments the ordinary contracted self opens to the vibrant source of awareness.

Spanda distinguishes Kashmir Śaivism from forms of non-dualism in which the absolute is pure stillness. For the Spanda school, stillness and movement are two aspects of one consciousness.
