A Great Question

Is religious truth universal?

Perennialism, exclusivism and pluralism.

Framing

The perennial philosophy holds that one truth underlies the world’s religions, and that their mystics, at least, agree. It is an attractive idea, and it has inspired generations of readers to study traditions not their own. But it is also contested.

Critics argue that it flattens real differences: that the Buddhist does not seek God, that the Christian does not seek the dissolution of the self, and that to call these “the same” is to impose one tradition’s view on the rest, often a modern Vedāntic or Christian one. Defenders reply that the differences lie in interpretation, and that comparison need not erase them.

Between the extremes are many positions: that the religions are true in different ways, or aim at different goals, or are partial views of a truth none fully grasps. Metanoia treats the question as open.

Perspectives

Voices from several traditions, each in its own terms. They are set side by side to be compared, not ranked.
